ABOUT THE IBVL

The Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League (IBVL) is a program of the of the Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee, a district sport committee of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, Inc. The girls' league began with eight schools in 2012 and then expanded to 30 schools with six divisions in 2013. Futher expansion followed each season up through the 2016 season and current configuaration which includes both competition at both the varsity and junior varsity level. The boys' progam began in the fall of 2013 with 15 schools.

Schools compete with three pairs of doubles teams to form a school varsity or junior varsity squad. Each school competes against another school's pair of three teams, in order of rank, to determine the dual match winners. Most divisions are at centralized sites with the top teams qualiffyfing for post-season competition.

IBVL Spring girls' season

Fifty teams compete for the ibvl title

The inclusion of NCAA Sand (Beach) Volleyball in 2012 saw the growth of high school beach volleyball in Southern California as interscholastic sport for girls. From the ranks of the Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee which operated junior beach volleyball programs in Southern California for over 25 years and the AAU which sanctioned it's first beach volleyball competition in 1957 in Manhattan Beach came the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League.

The spring of 2012, the league began with eight schools from Los Angeles County in a centralized spring sport league which included: Valencia, Mira Costa, Harvard-Westlake, Palos Verdes, Marymount, Marlborough, El Segundo and Carson.

The IBVL expanded the league to include schools from Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside and San Luis Obispo counties from both the CIF Southern Section and CIF Los Angles City Section member schools.

Initially, the league is divided into eight divisions and one conference. In addition, eighteen (19) teams are entered at the junior varsity level. Each school competes against each school in their respective division to determine a division champion. In addition, each school also has non-division matches in pre-season. The top schools in each division qualify for playoffs. Divisions of four schools earn two berths. Divisions of five schools earn three berths and divisions and conferences of six or more earn four berths into the playoffs. Currently, there is a combination of weekday and weekend centralized divisions on Saturdays and the addition of Northern California and San Diego districts which run division and league play at the local level to determine an entry into the California IBVL State Playoffs.

In addition to crowning a team champion, a one day pairs championship also takes place during the playoffs.
